Eglin Air Force Base is one of the United States’ largest and most important military installations. The base is named after Lieutenant Colonel Frederick I. Eglin, who was killed in a crash of his Northrop A-17 pursuit aircraft on a flight from Langley to Maxwell on 4 September 1937. The base also hosts the 53rd Wing and the 96th Air Base Wing in addition to the 7th Special Forces Group and the 6th Ranger Training Battalion of the United States Army.
